Michael Platini, instead of concentrating on successfully organizing the Euro starting today, made some very biased and insufferable comments about the Premier League. He launched an attack last night on what he called the “cheats” of English football, whose debt-ridden clubs threaten to dominate the game.
The direct assault by the Uefa president on the eve of the European Championship finals in Switzerland and Austria had repercussions at a meeting of the 20 Barclays Premier League club chairmen and chief executives being held at a secret location in Leicestershire. Peter Kenyon, and David Gill, his counterpart at United, were said to be furious with Platini’s attack on their clubs and their owners.
The proposal by Richard Scudamore, the Premier League’s chief executive, about the 39th game seemed to have angered Blatter as well as Platini. The increasing power of English club football is one thing these men hope to end soon. These attacks on English clubs directly and indirectly, as well as imposing limit on foreign players all seem to be a part of this plan. Blatter is now trying to convince the European commission about the 6+5 rule, which is likely to diminish the high standards set by English club football.
Platini also takes a dig at England saying they deserve to be out of Euro since they can't finish in the top two in a group of six, rubbing salt to the injury.He went on to say that Champions League trophy was won by United on financial credit. He said he is concerned about clubs being bought by Americans. Th point about clubs having to reduce their debts is fair, but to insult the clubs directly for this is unacceptable, especially from someone like Platini.
I think he should be more concerned about countries like France buying players from former colonies offering them citizenship and money. I don't know why he feels only the Premier League teams spend money or is it that he hasn't heard about the exploits of Real, Barcelona and Bayern. A person so biased at the top of European football hierarchy is an embarrassment to the footballing world. Pathetic!

It is true that the allegations by Platini don't come at the right time and at the right designation but I agree with his views that many Premiership clubs take huge amounts of loans and pay huge salaries and transfer cheques.This is not good for lower leagues and teams who are not able to afford talent with the big fishes in the sea always lurking around to get the fresh bait.
The debts of premiership clubs is outrageous and this certainly shows how clubs like Arsenal maintain a steady bank balance without the influx of many high profile signings and paying hefty payments.
The comments on England missing out for Euro are totally uncalled for and not justified.Especially as UEFA president,he should weigh his words before he speaks them.However true they are though.

@Tanuj:
The intentions of Blatter and Platini was good, but the implementation they plan needs serious reconsideration.

But its high time something be done before the English bigwigs just dominate the game and keep a huge load of debt in the process.This is why the top four are always "predicted" in advance.
8 June 2008 at 12:05
I don't think the top four would remain the same next year. Man City and Spurs will be lot better teams.

This has been the thought and expectations for a long time but ever since I guess 1996 when Newcastle were 2nd in the Premiership,the domestic title has always tilted to the heavyweights like Man U,Chelsea,Liverpool,Arsenal.
Compare that to La liga where even the likes of Real Sociedad could have clinched the title and the impressive finish of Chievo in Italy.
English premiership is indeed glittery and better than others but not in the form of unpredictability.Well in that case,French League is the worse off with Lyon winning the title 7yrs in a row!!That's bloody annoying.

@Arjun:
Maybe its time you started following the greatest game on the planet.
@Tanuj:I accept the EPL is less unpredictable but the race to title was most fascinating in England. Real, Bayern, Lyon and Inter were crowned without much fight. So taking that into account, plus the fight to avoid relegation, Epl has been very interesting last season.

I accept it was a great season but the top four didn't change AGAIN,did they?
Whereas in Italy,Milan missed out on champions league which shows the big clubs don't dominate like in England.
8 June 2008 at 21:04
Yeah, I get your point. Well the fact is all the leagues got either unpredictability or tight title race. nobody got both of it.
8 June 2008 at 21:18
The only problem is that the top four isn't changing and they're paying huge salaries to players even when they're highly in debt.
I don't think Platini's comments are too wrong either except the rubbing it in for English national team.
